Knowing How to Get Your Mac to Say the Time is a neat trick that can help you keep organized.

I have a sit-stand desk and when I learned How to Turn Your Mac into a Talking Clock I had it announce the time every half hour. I would then change my position from sitting to standing.

Below I will show you how to set the different time intervals. Even change the voice that announces your time.

Step 1. In the top left-hand corner click the Apple Menu ()

Step 2. From the Apple menu select System Settings

Apple Menu > System Settings
Apple Menu > System Settings

Step 3. On the system settings select Control Centre

Step 4. On the control center select Clock Options

System Settings > Control Centre > Clock
System Settings > Control Centre > Clock

Step 5. Switch on the tab Announce the time

System Settings > Control Centre > Clock Options
System Settings > Control Centre > Clock Options

Step 6. Choose the Interval for time announcements

At this point you have the option to choose between:

  • On the hour
  • On the half hour
  • On the quarter hour

Step 7. Choose customize Voice to select a voice

Now you can customize how the voice sounds when the time is announced.

There are a couple of different options that you get to choose from:

  • Voice – you have a whole host of different voices to choose from in the voice dropdown.
  • Use custom rate – you can make the chosen voice quicker or slower
  • Use custom volume – allows you to set how loud the voice is admitted.

Throughout the process, you can press the “Play” button to dial in the perfect voice for your experience.

System Settings > Control Centre > Clock > Customise Voice
System Settings > Control Centre > Clock > Customise Voice

Step 8. Select Done

Your Mac clock will announce the time at the given intervals and will sound how you like.

The Mac clock can also be set to Show Seconds in Taskbar Clock if you like your time to be precise.

How Do I Stop My Mac From Telling Me the Time?

While many love the ability to have their Mac announce the time. So that they can keep to schedules for others it can become annoying.

If you no longer want your Mac to tell you the time at given intervals then it is super easy to turn it off.

  1. In the top left-hand corner click the Apple Menu ()
  2. From the Apple menu select System Settings
  3. On the system settings select Control Centre
  4. On the control center select Clock Options
  5. Switch off the tab Announce the time
  6. Select Done

Following the above steps will quickly turn off the Mac time-telling days.
