Every computer that connects to the internet will have a Mac (Media Access Control) address. It is a unique 12-digit code that allows you to find individual devices on a network. They are not always easy to find and in this guide, I will show you How to Find Mac Address on Mac.

  1. In the top left-hand corner click the Apple Menu ()
  2. From the Apple menu select System Settings
  3. On the system settings select Network
  4. Select your Network Connection
  5. From the network select Advanced
  6. Your Mac address will be displayed

There are many reasons for wanting your mac address. But one thing to note is that you can have two mac addresses.

You will have an ethernet cable (wired) mac address and a wi-fi network (wireless) mac address.

Step 1. In the top left-hand corner click the Apple Menu ()

Step 2. From the Apple menu select system settings

Step 3. on system settings select Network

Step 4. Select your Network Connection

At this stage, you will select your internet connection. Below we are connected to a wi-fi network (wireless) as you can see by the green dot and “connected“.

If you see an ethernet cable (wired) with a green dot and “connected” this is the one you will select.

Advanced is in the bottom right corner you may need to scroll down the page to access it.

Finding MAC Address in macOS using Terminal

If you like to use the Terminal you are in luck. As you can identify both the ethernet cable (wired) mac address. As well as the wi-fi network (wireless) mac address.

To find the mac address using Terminal:

  • Open Spotlight
  • Search for and open Terminal
  • Type in “ifconfig” and press enter
ifconfig
