- In the top left-hand corner click the Apple Menu ()
- From the Apple menu select System Settings
- On the System Settings select Control Centre
- From the Sound dropdown select Always Show in Menu Bar

How to Get back Missing Volume Icon on Menu Bar On Mac
I have searched everywhere to find out why Apple removed the volume icon but there is little information available. Other than people complaining that it has now gone and little to no response from Apple.
Yet, my best guess is that there are now many ways to change the volume. If that is directly on the keyboard or on the macOS.
So let’s jump right into getting your Mac volume icon back on the menu bar:
Step 1. In the top left-hand corner click the Apple Menu ()
Step 2. From the Apple menu select System Settings
Step 3. On the System Settings select Control Centre
Step 4. From the Sound dropdown select Always Show in Menu Bar
At this stage you have three different options to choose from:
- Always Show in Menu Bar – the volume icon will always be visible on the menu bar.
- Show When Active – when playing anything with sound the volume icon will appear on the menu bar.
- Don’t Show in Menu Bar – the volume icon will not display even when sound is played.
Volume Icon Keeps Disappearing on Mac
If the Mac volume icon keeps disappearing or appearing then it is likely that it is set to Show When Active.
You will need to change this to “Always Show in Menu Bar” or “Don’t Show in Menu Bar” depending on your preference.
You change the volume icon settings from Apple Menu > System Setting > Control Centre > Sound > select your choice from the dropdown.
