How to Go to Downloads on Mac

While Apple is trying to push us to use cloud storage many still want to use the classic storage on our devices. I still love having my files on my HDD but with the push for cloud storage, the download folder doesn’t seem to be a priority. Learning how to go to downloads on Mac is for us who love the classic approach.

There are 3 main ways to get to the Mac download folder but the classic way is as follows.

  1. From the Mac Finder Menu Bar select Go
  2. From the Go dropdown Select Downloads

It is not always easy following along with a how-to with a simple list. So I have the how-to with pictures and, if you look below, even video instructions.

How to Go to Downloads on Mac

There are three different ways to get to your mac download folder. I use all in different situations depending on what I am currently doing so all three are worth knowing.

Step 1. From the Mac Menu Bar select Go

If you don’t see “Finder” on the Mac menu bar you will need to click within a finder window or on the desktop.

Step 2. From the Go dropdown Select Downloads

How to Find Downloads Folder Using the Keyboard on Mac?

Using Mac keyboard shortcuts on the Mac can speed up many processes, and there are hundreds maybe even thousands that can help you out.

To open the downloads folder the keyboard shortcut you first want to be within a finder window and press Option + Command + L (⌥ + ⌘ + L) this will instantly open your Mac downloads folder.

Find Downloads Folder From Finder Window

If you are within a folder these are all “finder” windows and you will be within a finder window.

So you can skip step 1 yet if you are not in a finder folder (folder) following step 1 will be the quickest way of opening a finder window.

Step 1. Press the Finder icon on the Mac dock

Step 2. From the finder window select downloads from the lefthand menu bar

How To Restore Disappeared Downloads Folder To Sidebar

If you don’t see the downloads folder within the sidebar you will need to turn it on from the preferences. This is an easy thing to do and you do this by following the simple steps below.

Step 1. From the Mac menu bar select “Finder”

Step 2. Now on the Finder dropdown select “Preferences”

Step 3. In the “Finder Preferences” tick the “Downloads” box to add it to the sidebar
