If you are spending hours sitting in front of a bright computer screen it can be a strain on your eyes. Mac has an option to turn on dark mode to help your eyes. In this post, we will learn how to turn on dark mode on Mac.

  1. In the top left-hand corner click the Apple Menu ()
  2. From the Apple menu select System Preferences
  3. On the system preferences select General
  4. On the general page select one of the Appearance mode options (Light, Dark, Auto)

How to Enable Dark Mode on Mac

While dark mode can make your eyes feel better as the screen will not be as bright. However, turning it on and off makes can be a pain so I always recommend selecting the auto appearance mode.

In this mode when the room becomes dark the Mac will slowly turn into dark mode and this will slowly adjust your eyes to the change of light.

Why Does My Mac Not Have Dark Mode?

Every Mac should now have a dark mode available. If your Mac does not have access to the dark mode it is recommended to update to the latest macOS which should then install the option to turn on dark mode.

Is Dark Mode Better for Eyes?

Dark mode reduces the glare that you get from the screen hence reducing the strain on your eyes. While dark mode can be better for your eyes it can cause your eyes to become sensitive to light. If your eyes do start to become sensitive to light you should reduce the use of dark mode.
